Born and raised in New York City, Terry Nelson spent his early years in the Upper West Side of Manhattan. His love for music and film has remained constant since childhood. During his teenage years, he would choose to read Rolling Stone or books about music or movies, rather than the classics. Terry also began the practice of journaling and documenting his reflections on a wide range of topics. His dream was to become a filmmaker, specifically a screenwriter.
After college, he worked as a Rock LP buyer for Tower Records Lincoln Center before starting a career in film and television post-production in 1989. For the next three decades, Terry wore many hats in post-production, including roles such as videotape operator, scheduler, editor, and even voice actor for a brief period. Despite his busy career, Terry never stopped writing – even if it was just for himself. He landed his first writing gig at Essence magazine for their Brothers column.
In 2002, he began working on a piece based on his experiences growing up in New York City during the late 1970s and early 1980s. Terry became a contributor to the popular music website Albumism in 2015. His tribute to Marvin Gaye’s What’s Going On LP is the most read article in the website’s history.
